Mayslake Peabody Estate is a dynamic historic resource that promotes inspiring experiences that enrich the lives of our visitors and community.

Mayslake Hall was completed in 1921 as the retirement home of Francis Stuyvesant Peabody, the founder of Peabody Coal. It was designed by Chicago architect Benjamin H. Marshall, acclaimed for his work on the the Drake and Blackstone hotels and other historic revival buildings.

After Peabody’s death in 1922, the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor purchased the estate and used it as a spiritual retreat center until 1991.

Today the estate is owned by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and serves as a public site for cultural and educational programming. The Forest Preserve District’s restoration of historic Mayslake Hall is ongoing. Visitors can experience the grandeur of
Mayslake Hall and its architecture by joining a tour or by attending one of many theatrical and musical performances, art classes, lectures, exhibits, and other educational and cultural programs that take place at the estate throughout the year.
