assemblies of empathy Opening Reception

Presented by North Central College Fine & Performing Arts at North Central College Oesterle Library

North Central College presents “assemblies of empathy,” an exhibit of art by Ramon Nayar. The artists will be present to greet visitors and discuss his work at a free reception from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

“assemblies of empathy” showcases creative work inspired by beautiful charitable programs of different high-profile nonprofit organizations. The inspiration rooted for the body of work created stems from Nayar's personal connection to various causes, ranging from animal welfare, conservation, the fine arts and youth empowerment. A storytelling format comprised of both written narratives and wall art provide a creative backdrop inviting exhibit patrons to celebrate the work created from this inspiration.

In a statement about his work, Nayar expresses the importance of the storytelling format. “The creative expression behind my work is intended to leave a lasting impression on both the heart and mind--an impression very reminiscent to the depth of thought and compassion associated with the era of writing letters, and yet with a presentation that has strong parallels to those of comic books and graphic novels. ... I believe that words and images, especially when assembled to complement each other and support an idea and/or unlock new ideas, is what powerful storytelling offers to move the heart and mind."

As part of the experience, an invitation is extended to the public to learn more about the specific nonprofit programs that benefit from the sale of Nayar’s work through a series of dedicated charity spotlights taking place throughout the exhibit. Spotlight events are free and will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, 7-8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 2, 1-2 p.m.; and Thursday, Dec. 7, 7-8 p.m. in North Central’s Oesterle Library Gallery.

The exhibit will also debut a new style from Nayar, an organic mosaic design considered the next evolution of Nayar’s work. The mosaic takes high-resolution images and orchestrates the composition into asymmetrical segments. This separation leverages negative space to provide the innate human reaction of visually making the corresponding connections. There is also a depth associated with the placement and angle of the pieces, allowing for a 3-dimensional representation of what would otherwise be a 2-dimensional composition. This body of work can truly be experienced firsthand, bringing relevance to the unique experience of physically being at the exhibit.
