Archaeology Lecture: Josephus, Egypt, and the Memory of Synagogue Origins

Presented by Wheaton College at Adams Hall

The School of Biblical and Theological Studies invites you to the second lecture of the 68th Annual Archaeology Lecture Series. Dr. Andrew Krause will deliver a lecture titled "Josephus, Egypt, and the Memory of Synagogue Origins' on March 16, at 7:00 PM in Adams 301.Our earliest evidence of distinct synagogue institutions hails from Egypt in the 3rd century BCE. By the first century CE, this institution is spoken of as being of great antiquity and originating in the work of Moses, which is a tantalizing connection, though one that lacks direct evidence. The first-century CE Roman-Jewish historian Flavius Josephus presents sustained and coherent picture of an Egyptian and Mosaic origin of the synagogue, though also a clear historical tendentiousness that helps the modern historian to understand this investiture of a recent institution with this high level of scripturalization and antiquity.

Dr. Andrew Krause is the Academic Director of ACTS Seminaries of Trinity Western University and Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies.

This event is free and open to the public and will take place in Adams Hall,   Room 301 Cozette Lecture Hall, located at 420 East Franklin Street in Wheaton. For more information, contact Linda Bretz at 630.752.5054 or linda.bretz@wheaton.edu.
