Through discussion and demonstration, Rebecca Tulloch traces the origins of the American Spiritualism movement which promoted the belief that the living could communicate with the dead.
The American Spir1tualism movement can be first traced to the year 1848 and the village of Hydesville, N.Y. where two teenaged sisters, Maggie and Kate Fox, claimed that they had communicated with the ghost of a man murdered at the house years before their family moved in. Reports of their experience first appeared in the NY Tribune and were later published in other newspapers across America and Europe. Also called, "Victorian Spiritualism", the movement was fueled by the deaths of over 600,ooo soldiers during the Civil War.
On Thursday evening, October 20th, Rebecca Tulloch, a local historian and portrayer, will share the story of Maggie Fox and her sister, explain how mediums talked to the spirits and show photographs of spirits taken by spirit photographers and those that set out to discredit them as charlatans. Tulloch will conduct a friendly seance in which ghosts from beyond may make their presence known to the audience.
