West Suburban Symphony: Classic Celebrations

Presented by West Suburban Symphony at North Central College - Wentz Concert Hall

Our opening 2021-22 concert celebrates nature's grandeur and human triumphs through inspiring classical music of enduring popularity. Bedrich Smetana's The Moldau carries you down the rippling Vltava River as it flows past Czech villages while Felix Mendelssohn's The Hebrides transports you to the dark beauty of Fingal's Cave on the Scottish island of Staffa. Through Jean Sibelius' stirring tone poem Finlandia, you'll feel the fervor of the Finnish people in their fight for freedom from czarist rule in the early 1900s. In Polovtsian Dances, Alexander Borodin immerses you in a nomadic tribe's revelry after their capture of Russian Prince Igor. The exotic Egyptian March by Johann Strauss Jr. puts you in the midst of the extravagant ceremonies that marked the opening of the Suez Canal. And Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's jubilant Marriage of Figaro Overture draws you into romance and comic intrigue within a Spanish count's castle.
