Summer Activities Box

Presented by Lombard Historical Society at Unknown

The Lombard Historical Society (LHS) presents four fun Summer Activity Boxes for children to enjoy at home. Summer Box themes include Victorian Tea Party, Victorian Garden, Pioneer Games and Pioneer Chores. Each box is suitable for children ages 6 – 12 and has enough materials for four children. Registration for the boxes begins immediately. Pickup of the boxes starts Tuesday, July 7, 2020 from 10 am to 4 pm. For more information about Summer Activity Boxes, or the Lombard Historical Society, please visit the website, send an email or phone 630.629.1885.

Bring history into your home with these program kits in boxes built around four different activity themes; Victorian Tea Party, Victorian Garden, Pioneer Games and Pioneer Chores. Each box, created by LHS Education Coordinator Rae Slowik, will include instructions for several activities, necessary supplies for each craft, and fun, accessible history facts.

Victorian Tea Party Box

Put the kettle on and unpack the teapot and cups! Directions and supplies to create a Victorian style calling card and a ladies’ Victorian fan are included, as well as Fun facts about High Teas and Low Teas, and how to use your new calling card. The Victorian Tea Party Box, inspired by LHS tea parties, includes tea - all you need to add are the fancy snacks, homemade or store bought. Don’t forget to dress up! You may also select a croquet set (up-charge applied).

Victorian Garden Box

Learn about the distinctive style of a Victorian Garden and the plants popular with Victorians. Included in the Victorian Garden Box are instructions and materials for making a seed bomb. That’s right – a seed bomb – a super friendly flower-seed bomb that adults will love too. There’s also information about the importance of a Victorian Garden, native plant species, pollinators and planning your own garden.

Pioneer Games Box

Living on the Frontier was more than just work. Pioneers also played fun games! The Pioneer Games Box includes everything you need to play Marbles and Hoops and Graces, as well as instructions on how to play, and the history behind each game. Materials and instructions for making a Cup and Ball Game and Corn Husk Dolls are a part of the fun as well.

Pioneer Chores Box

Pioneer chores are a lot more fun with this activity box than it was for pioneer era children. It was hard work being a pioneer. The Pioneer Chores Box contains a weaving activity complete with wool carding tools, wool, drop spindles, and a loom with yarn to make a small blanket. Make your own sheep too - the cotton ball kind. Don’t forget to make the butter. Step by step instructions for each activity is included, as well as stories about the pioneer way of life.

Registration for the boxes begins immediately. Pickup of the boxes starts Tuesday, July 7, 2020 from 10 am to 4 pm. The borrowing fee for each box is $25 for one week (late fees apply). There is a separate $10 fee for borrowing the croquet set as an add-on to one of the boxes. Families are asked to check out only one box at a time. All boxes and contents are sanitized between each release and given a waiting period of three days before being checked out again.
