In this workshop, you will begin exploring color through black and white studies in value contrast and density. Exercises with colored paper and color mixing will help you to understand hues and color schemes. There will be an opportunity to make responses to various types of music with experimental marks on paper. Opaque and transparent use of gouache, gradation through the letters, layering, and working dark and light on medium value paper will all be demonstrated along with opportunities to try each technique.

A slide talk will illustrate color as a tool for a wide range of expressions. Knowledge of one writing style is recommended.

Supplies: SUPPLY LIST sumi ink in a round green bottle Winsor Newton gouache in tubes: the primary colors plus white Holbein pearl gold gouache in a tube 11x14 or 11x17” white bond or photocopier paper for practice exercises broad-edged pen points: Speedball C-0, C-1, C-2 and/or Brause set of nine (esp 3/4 through 3 mm) several broad-edged watercolor brushes: 1/4” to 1” widths HB pencil and kneaded eraser inexpensive pointed brush (sometimes numbered 6-10) for mixing paint and palette with at least six wells assorted color pencils (especially Berol Prismacolor) and markers for layout several sheets of middle value (between black and white) of neutral-colored charcoal paper (Canson MiTeintes is easy to get) such as tan, gray or medium blue approx 11x14” size several sheets of Fabriano Artistico or Arches Text Wove cold press watercolor paper approx 11x14”
