Embark on an exciting Musical Journey in 2019-2020 with the opening concert of the DSO’s 66th season, showcasing music that stretches across Europe from sunny Spain to central Germany. Lush settings of Spanish folk tunes, which held great appeal for so many Romantic composers, are brought to the fore in Maurice Ravel’s Alborada del Gracioso, Emanuel Chabrier's España, and Manuel de Falla’s Seven Popular Spanish Songs. Acclaimed Chicago-area soprano Ariana Strahl, celebrated for the “devastating brilliance and incredible ease” of her vocal technique, is the featured soloist in the Falla. Johannes Brahms’ masterful Symphony No. 4 in E minor – without question the most lyrical and the most polished of his four great essays in the genre – is the culminating work on this highly appealing, season-opening concert. From the yearning sighs of its poignant opening to the mighty power of its passacaglia Finale, the meticulously crafted Brahms Fourth takes the listener on an enthralling musical and emotional journey.
