Found Object Sculpture Workshop: Garry Noland: Base Materials 4.05

Found Object Sculpture Workshop: Garry Noland: Base Materials 4.05

Presented by Cleve Carney Museum of Art at Cleve Carney Museum of Art

Garry Noland’s artwork is made of found and reclaimed materials: National Geographic magazines, corrugated cardboard, bubble wrap, wood, pvc pipes, marbles, duct tape, foam, to name some. Picked from alleys, side streets and urban dumps these base "found" materials are carved into, painted on and altered in his studio. In sculptures and textile-like surfaces, he emphasizes pattern, surface and texture as the byproduct of actions like cutting, marking, taping and gluing. The resulting combinations set up the inevitable dialogue between the new/old, purposeful/accidental and play/toil.

For his installation in the Cleve Carney Art Gallery Noland will be installing a site-specific work in the large North-facing gallery windows comprised of found and recycled foam boards. The effect of this installation will be similar to a large stained glass window constructed entirely of discarded or overlooked material. Noland will also be displaying a series of altered copies of the same edition of National Geographic magazines that he has been collecting and working on for the past several decades.
