In celebration of the upcoming US Senior Women’s Open at Chicago Golf Club July 12th-15th, the Wheaton Public Library is proud to host a joint golf exhibit between The Wheaton Historic Commission and the USGA Museum!
Located on the main floor of the library in the Arts and Culture Center, this exhibit highlights the critical role women and Wheaton played in the creation of professional golf. Wheaton was a center of golf activity, with prominent members creating items that would become the modern club, pin, tee, and golf ball. Wheaton women had an early role in driving the popularity of the sport with local legends Bessie Smith and J. Anna Carpenter winning tournaments all while wearing a full dress and corset. There were even private train lines between the many courses in the Chicagoland area! There’s so much to see. Don’t forget to get a picture with Chicago Golf Club Architect and founding USGA member Charles Blair MacDonald and tag it #Wheatonsummerofgolf.
The exhibit will be on display until July 16th. Thank you to our partners The Wheaton Historic Commission: https://wheaton.il.us/292/Historic-Commission and the USGA Museum: http://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/usga-golf-museum.html.
