Local Artists Showcase Contemporary Art at EAG Spring Members Show

Local Artists Showcase Contemporary Art at EAG Spring Members Show

at Elmhurst Art Museum

The public is invited to the free opening reception on Friday, March 16, 2018 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

The Spring Members Show presents an opportunity to view and purchase affordable original contemporary artwork by emerging local artists from the greater Chicago area. Their breadth of styles and medium encompasses dramatically different artworks including watercolor, ceramics, oil, acrylic, digital, collage, photographic and sculptural works involving landscapes, portraits, abstract and other styles.

The inspiration for each artist is as diverse as the spectrum of media employed. Exhibiting artist, Eve Ozer, described her mixed media acrylic painting, “Abstrakt Gaze #1,” as “If a cat has nine lives, this painting has thirteen. The final version is inspired by my morning ritual of lighting a candle and sitting quietly in semi-dawn. Meditation is a form of and internal abstract gaze.”
Another artist, Fred Moss, found his inspiration at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. He explained his artistic method to create a 3D sculptural oil painting, "Water Lillies." “I utilize a palette knife to sculpt with paint an impressionistic interpretation of the Lillies at the Chicago Botanic Gardens.”

“Monday Morning,” an acrylic painting by artist Terri Shimkus is an image to which we can all relate. The painting is a boldly colored humorous abstract of pretty much what many workers mentally or physically feel like on Monday morning, going back to work after a hard weekend of fun or chores.

Cassie Swierenga, EAG President, commented that the Members shows in the EAG Gallery “provide an opportunity not only to view artwork by more than 50 different local artists, but to meet the artists and learn first-hand about their work.” An added bonus is that purchases provide three-way support to the artists, the Guild and the Elmhurst Art Museum.

The exhibition can be viewed during regular Museum hours, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm and Friday from 11 am to 7 pm. Admission is $9 adults / $8 seniors except the first Friday of each month which is the Museum’s free admission day. EAM and Guild members, students and children under 18 are admitted free. More information is available at elmhurstartistsguild.org and elmhurstartmuseum.org.

The EAG gallery is not-for-profit, operated by the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild. It features contemporary artworks in a variety of styles and media. In addition to four member shows each year, the guild hosts exhibitions of individual member’s artwork and invitational shows for significant local artists. Exhibits are partially supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council.
