Call for Artists: Competition, Dance

The College of DuPage Department of Dance is hosting the 5th Annual Choreography Showcase and Competition this summer with cash prizes and various awards. Interested choreographers must submit their application by June 1 for full consideration and will be notified by June 15 if they are chosen.  Event will take place on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL and will be open to the public.

The College of DuPage Choreography Showcase will present emerging choreographers as well as build and expand engaged audiences on the COD campus.  The showcase will give aspiring dancemakers a platform to develop their artistic voice as well as an opportunity to present and develop an audience for their work.

– Open to choreographers 18 years and older
– Any dance work not exceeding 10 mins is eligible.
– Choreographic pieces may be set on any number of dancers.

Choreographers must complete an application form, pay the $10 application fee (made out to College of DuPage) and submit their proposed work by June 1st. DVDs are accepted but will not be returned. Works in progress will be considered but must be proposed and supplemented with past work. The pieces will be reviewed by the COD dance faculty.

Selected choreographers will perform their work on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the Playhouse Theatre in the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage. Each choreographer will have a maximum of 50 minutes on stage to work and rehearse their piece the day of the event. We will do our best to accommodate schedule requests but no guarantees. Each selected choreographer is required to attend the show in order to participate in the post-show discussion. The performance will be videotaped by a professional crew and copies of the taping will be available for purchase.

Esteemed panelists will decide the winners based on creativity and originality. Past judges included teachers, choreographers, and artistic directors from major Chicago Dance Companies..

Cash prizes are awarded to the top three choreographers:

1stPlace $700             2nd Place $500                         3rd Place $200

One or more of the selected choreographers may be chosen to perform their piece on the McAninch Arts Center Main Stage as a Featured Guest during the 2019-2020 school year with an additional stipend.

Important note: Lighting must use a generic plot; technical needs must be minimal. See HERE for layout and shape of the Playhouse Theatre’s unique setting.
