The 2023 Chicago Theological Initiative presents “When the Patriarch of Moscow Blesses a War: Russian Apocalypticism and the Sacralization of Violence,” a lecture by Prof. Paul Gavrilyuk, Ph.D., on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at 7:30 PM.

The ideology that fuels Russia's war against Ukraine was produced within the bosom of the Russian Orthodox Church and has Kirill Gundiaev, the Patriarch of Moscow as its major proponent. The ideology of the "Russian World" is imagined as a holder of the traditional Christian values and asserted in opposition to the secular West.
