The Center for Urban Engagement Presents "Policing the Open Road"

When Americans think of freedom, they often picture the open road. Yet nowhere are we more likely to encounter the long arm of the law than in our cars — which has had disastrous consequences for racial equality in our criminal justice system.

Sarah A. Seo is a professor at Columbia Law School, where she teaches criminal law, criminal procedure, and legal history. She is also the author of Policing the Open Road: How Cars Transformed American Freedom (Harvard UP 2019).
