Based on the true story of Addison White, an escaped slave Grades: 3rd – 8th Curriculum Connections: Literature/Reading, History, Music
Addison White was a slave who took the “railroad” to freedom, escaping from Kentucky traveling north to Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Befriended by a farmer, Addison worked for his meals by day and learned to read and write at night. Federal marshals suspected the farmer to be an abolitionist who prepared to arrest Addison to return him to slavery, but Addison was rescued by the citizens of the town.
