Puzzles of Petitionary Prayer

The Wheaton College Department of Philosophy presents “Puzzles of Petitionary Prayer,” a lecture by Dr. Scott Davison. This will be the first lecture in the department’s 2019-20 Philosophy Speaker Series.

What does it mean to say that God has answered a prayer? This turns out to be a complicated question. What is the purpose of petitionary prayer? Can we ever know that God has answered our prayers? What is the relationship between faith and petitionary prayer? These questions and others will be addressed from the perspective of philosophy and Christian theology.

Dr. Scott A. Davison is Professor of Philosophy at Morehead State University and the author of Petitionary Prayer: A Philosophical Investigation(Oxford University Press, 2017) and On the Intrinsic Value of Everything (Continuum Press, 2012). He also serves as the associate editor for Faith and Philosophy (the journal of the Society of Christian Philosophers) and the book review editor for the International Journal for Philosophy of Religion.
