Students in any grade in a Lombard, Glen Ellyn or Villa Park elementary, middle or high school are invited to enter the 2021 Lombard Historical Society (LHS) Sheldon Peck Art & Essay Contest. As their submission, contestants will have the option of creating an original journal entry, or work of art, inspired by the work of Sheldon Peck. This local history project is sponsored by the Lombard Historical Society. All entries must be received by the Lombard Historical Society Education Coordinator [education@lombardhistory.org] by 11:59 PM on February 28, 2021. Artwork must be photographed, scanned and emailed as well. Find full details and instructions at lombardhistory.org/art-and-essay-contest. For more information about this event or the Lombard Historical Society, please visit lombardhistory.org, email info@lombardhistory.org, or phone 630.629.1885.

Students may choose to write an essay in the form of a journal entry, or create a work of art in any medium, that is inspired by Sheldon Peck, as their submission. Copies of original source material and documents will be available online so that students can learn about Sheldon Peck and his work as an itinerant folk artist, radical abolitionist and conductor on the Underground Railroad. Students will also be able to read Frank Peck’s (Sheldon’s youngest son) original journal entries that provide details about Freedom Seekers staying with the Peck family. It is also recommended that students visit the outside of the Sheldon Peck Homestead (unfortunately, the museum is closed at this time), the Lombard Historical Society website [lombardhistory.org] and Facebook page for more information, and inspiration, about Sheldon Peck.

The Sheldon Peck Art & Essay Contest is open to all students enrolled in any Lombard, Glen Ellyn or Villa Park private or public elementary school with a school address in Lombard, Glen Ellyn or Villa Park. Home-school students, who have a Lombard, Glen Ellyn or Villa Park mailing address, may also enter the contest.

A virtual awards ceremony for the winners and their families will be held at 2 pm on March 20, 2020. The ceremony will also be live streamed on Facebook and recorded and available on the LHS website for viewing later. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners.

The Lombard Historical Society celebrates Lombard's heritage by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of Lombard and operates the Victorian Cottage Museum, the Carriage House and the Society’s Archives at 23 W.
