Benjamin Calvert

My art originated as a mechanism to help me deal with the grief of losing my mother. Seeking a therapeutic alternative to my unhappy state, my grandmother suggested that I reconstitute my sorrow into an energy that could be channeled into art. I started wood block printing by taking an independent study course at Knox College. I found working with wood blocks very soothing. My first print, “Invasions,” was published in Catch, Knox’s literary magazine. The medium became a sustaining passion. I have a strong feeling for nature, and the wood complements my images. Different types of wood provide varied and often fascinating backgrounds, depending upon the subject. Recently, I've been using my photography as the base for my art works. For some images I use linoleum blocks in order to get more detailed lines in a small area. The majority of my creations are printed on Japanese Kozuke paper, using oil based inks. Pulling that first print off the block is pure joy. The excitement multiplies when there are multiple blocks for each color involved. Each successive color is a layer that informs the mystery and appeal of the final image. I take much pleasure in hearing interpretations of my work from others. I enjoy creating images that are at once familiar, yet open to interpretation. The more diverse the comments, the more effective I believe my work to be.

I've been drawing since I was 5 years old, sitting on my dad's lap in church. I still draw in church, by the way. But I don't sit on my dad's lap. That would be weird. I have to be creative. So I spend lots of time sketching, painting, screen printing and things like that. I am a professionally trained graphic designer and I also teach college courses when called upon.Sometimes I write. I hate to cook, clean or shop. My art explores light and dark, good and evil. There is always a balance between the two opposing forces. There is much to be found in the darkness. I think people need connection and art can provide opportunities for conversation as well as contemplation. I hope my work hits home for you. Thanks.

On a constant quest to balance her roles as an artist, marketing professional and Mom, Cherylyn carves out creative time - sometimes literally. As a lifelong artist and learner, ideas are inspired by parallels and patterns experienced in everyday life. Her artistic passions include relief block carving and printmaking; mixed media; wearable art jewelry; and assemblage. Her work is primarily figurative, incorporating nature – revealing surrealistic themes of domesticity, adaptability, isolation and perseverance. Besides creating, Cherlyn is passionate about working within the community and advocating for the arts. A traditional art education from the American Academy of Art (1992) and 20 + years of graphic design create her art foundation. But more recently, she has earned her Bachelors Degree in Communications with a minor in Fine Art from Elmhurst College (2017).

Maureen McKee

I received my formal training at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and spent many years as a graphic designer and art director. I now dedicate my creative endeavors to painting. I am an award winning artist of many juried and selective art shows in the Midwest area. My work can best be described having impressionist tendencies that incorporate rhythm and vibrancy. Each painting takes it’s own imaginative pilgrimage. I work primarily in oil media - Oil Pastel, Oil, Oil Stick and print Monotypes and enjoy the diversity of each. In my explorations of creating visual images, inspiration comes from people and nature and everything around me. The rhythms and variations of nature are ever-changing and ever-moving. The shadow, light, temperature, structure, view point and my own frame of mind at any moment make images ever-evolving. Creating paintings with harmonious color and composition is a constant goal.

Sally A Monkus

I am Resident Artist at ClaySpace Ceramic Studio in Lisle, Illinois. Although I began working in ceramics only recently I studied it while a student. I take inspiration from the irregularities found in the natural world and my love of unconventional pottery. Because I was trained in printmaking, I have a strong interest in process; in the layering of materials and ideas. It is an important element in my work. I enjoy processes for their own sake, and the ways in which method informs the image. The evolution of a piece is never a preconceived notion of what the work will be. All my work is an evolution whether I am working in 2d or 3d or digitally.

Mark Russell

Each of my paintings is hand-crafted. The process I use is intentionally slow, thoughtful, and methodical—much like a meditation while painting. The result is artwork that is most often described as serene and calming. The imagined landscapes of my paintings and monoprints are reflections of my experiences and memories of the open spaces and prairie settings of my Midwestern roots. With oil paint and various mediums I apply many thin layers, to achieve unique surfaces and atmospheric effects that capture nature’s ever-changing light, color and weather. INSTRUCTION I teach the way that I like to experience a workshop: create a stimulating environment for learning and experimenting, balanced with plenty of time for group and individual discussion.
